Cesaltina Pacheco Pires a Rule for Updating Ambiguous Beliefs

چکیده

When preferences are such that there is no unique additive prior, the issue of which updating rule to use is of extreme importance. This paper presents an axiomatization of the rule which requires updating of all the priors by Bayes rule. The decision maker has conditional preferences over acts. It is assumed that preferences over acts conditional on eventE happening, do not depend on lotteries received on E, obey axioms which lead to maxmin expected utility representation with multiple priors, and have common induced preferences over lotteries. The paper shows that when all priors give positive probability to an event E, a certain coherence property between conditional and unconditional preferences is satisfied if and only if the set of subjective probability measures considered by the agent given E is obtained by updating all subjective prior probability measures using Bayes rule.

The Ex-Ante Non-Optimality of the Dempster-Schafer Updating Rule for Ambiguous Beliefs (A Commentary on "Updating Ambiguous Beliefs' by Gilboa and Schmeidler)

The most widely used updating rule for non-additive probabilities is the Dempster-Schafer rule. Schmeidler and Gilboa have developed a model of decision making under uncertainty based on non-additive probabilities, and in their paper "Updating Ambiguous Beliefs" they justify the Dempster-Schafer rule based on a maximum likelihood procedure. This note shows in the context of Schmeidler-Gilboa pr...

Predation and reputation acquisition in debt markets⋆

This paper presents a model of predation based on reputational differences between the entrant and an incumbent. While the incumbent has an established reputation in the debt market, the entrants’s quality is not yet known in the debt market. We show that the incumbent may have incentives to prey in order to interfere with the “reputation acquisition” of the entrant.

Intersection Bounds, Robust Bayes, and Updating Ambiguous Beliefs

This paper develops multiple-prior Bayesian inference for a set-identi…ed parameter whose identi…ed set is constructed by an intersection of two identi…ed sets. We formulate an econometrician’s practice of "adding an assumption" as "updating ambiguous beliefs." Among several ways to update ambiguous beliefs proposed in the literature, we consider the DempsterShafer updating rule (Dempster (1968...

Location choice under delivered pricing: a reinterpretation

This article reinterprets, under a common framework, previous results on location choice under delivered pricing. The paper clearly identifies the economic forces which explain why the socially optimal locations are an equilibrium of the location-price game in some models, and why they are not an equilibrium in other models. The paper shows that the rationale behind Hamilton et al. (Reg Sci Urb...

Delivered versus mill nonlinear pricing with endogenous market structure

This paper discusses a model where consumers differ according to one unobservable (preference for quality) and one observable characteristic (location), with nonlinear prices arising in equilibrium. The main question addressed is whether firms should be allowed to practice different nonlinear prices at each location (delivered nonlinear pricing) or should be forced to set a unique nonlinear con...
